There are some pretty important key items that impact our health. We know diet and exercise are important and we have some great info on those, but did you know that the Bible talks about conditions for good health?
"He said, 'If you listen carefully to the voice of the Lord your God and do what is right in his eyes, if you pay attention to His commands and keep all His decrees, I will not bring on you any of the diseases I brought on the Egyptians, for I am the Lord who heals you." Exodus 15:26, NIV. "Worship the Lord your God, and His blessing will be on your food and water. I will take away sickness from among you." Exodus 23:25, NIV. What can be done to prevent sexually transmitted diseases? "That is why I say to run from sex sin. No other sin affects the body as this one does. When you sin this sin it is against your own body." I Corinthians 6:18, TLB. "You shall not commit adultery." Exodus 20:14, NIV. But not all disease is related to our choices nor does failure to stay healthy mean God does not love you. More on failing health and terminal illness here.
While not all sickness has a direct cause that we have control over, some diseases are a direct result of sin. First, sin caused death and destruction just because of it's existence. Genesis 2-3. Secondly, sin can be part in directly causing a disease such as sexually transmitted diseases (hard to get that if you are celibate or monogamous). Thirdly, the guilt of sin can be a factor in weakening the immune system and allowing disease to set in. "My wounds fester and stink because of my foolish sins. I am bent over and racked with pain. All day long I walk around filled with grief. A raging fever burns within me, and my health is broken. I am exhausted and completely crushed. My groans come from an anguished heart. You know what I long for, Lord; you hear my every sigh." Psalm 38:5-9 NLT. See mental wellness for more info or go through our Bible study on salvation.
"Wine gives false courage; hard liquor leads to brawls; what fools men are to let it master them, making them reel drunkenly down the street!" Proverbs 20:1, TLB. "Whose heart is filled with anguish and sorrow? Who is always fighting and quarreling? Who is the man with bloodshot eyes and many wounds? It is the one who spends long hours in the taverns, trying out new mixtures. Don't let the sparkle and the smooth taste of strong wine deceive you. For in the end it bites like a poisonous serpent; it stings like an adder. You will see hallucinations and have delirium tremors, and you will say foolish, silly things that would embarrass you no end when sober. You will stagger like a sailor tossed at sea, clinging to a swaying mast. And afterwards you will say, 'I didn't even know it when they beat me up." Proverbs 23:29-35, TLB.
